This is the reason you keep your camera on in standby on it's tripod in your backseat while taking a evening drive to relax. I arrived late at the docks but just saw the colors but with hundreds of people taking pictures of the sunset and of friends with the sunset as a backdrop I really thought no way anything would come out. I just used the AV -/+ 2 AEB settings on my Canon T2i kit 18-55mm set at 18mm. each shot took no more than 2 min. just kept moving saw a capture took the capture total of 60 (x3) in only 45 min.or maybe an hour and everyone of them are turning out good. It just takes time to post process. When nature gives you the light show you are forced to capture it.
